Reef Tank Maintenance: Keeping Corals Thriving

Calcium, alkalinity, trace elements, and equipment care for reef tank maintenance that supports coral growth.

Reef Tank Maintenance: Keeping Corals Thriving

Reef tank maintenance is the most demanding branch of aquarium care because stony corals consume the very elements that build their skeletons, and the chemistry that supports them must be actively replenished. Reef tank maintenance is the recurring work that keeps calcium, alkalinity, magnesium, and trace elements stable enough for calcification to continue, and a drift in any of them weakens the coral that took years to grow.

The backbone of reef tank maintenance is alkalinity, which buffers pH and provides the carbonate that corals incorporate into their skeletons. Alkalinity should stay between 7 and 11 dKH depending on the system, and a drop below that range weakens coral skeletons and invites the pH swings that stress the entire tank. Testing and dosing alkalinity at every visit is non-negotiable, because the cost of skipping it is measured in livestock.

Calcium is the other pillar of reef tank maintenance. Stony corals consume calcium to build their skeletons, and the level should stay between 380 and 450 ppm depending on the coral density. A calcium reactor, dosing pump, or manual two-part dosing keeps it stable, and the method matters less than the consistency of measuring and replacing what the livestock consumes, because a falling calcium level weakens the very structure the reef is built on.

Magnesium regulates how calcium and carbonate interact, and it belongs in every reef tank maintenance routine. Magnesium should stay near 1300–1350 ppm, and a drop destabilizes the calcium and alkalinity that the corals depend on, which is why testing it alongside the other major parameters is what separates a managed reef from one that is slowly drifting toward a crash that the owner does not see coming.

Equipment service is a larger part of reef tank maintenance than any other type of aquarium care. Protein skimmers, return pumps, powerheads, UV sterilizers, calcium reactors, dosing pumps, and heaters all need regular cleaning and calibration, and a clogged skimmer throat or a dosing pump that has drifted reduces the life support that the coral depends on. The equipment that keeps a reef alive is the equipment that needs the most attention.

Water changes in reef tank maintenance use pre-mixed saltwater that has been circulating for at least 24 hours to fully dissolve and stabilize, not a fresh mix that can burn sensitive coral polyps. A 10–20% change every one to two weeks, using RODI water and a quality reef salt, dilutes dissolved wastes and replenishes trace elements, and the patience of mixing ahead is what protects the livestock a rushed change would stress.

Documentation is essential in reef tank maintenance because the parameters are too many to track by memory. A log of salinity, alkalinity, calcium, magnesium, nitrate, phosphate, and temperature at each visit reveals trends — falling alkalinity, creeping nitrate, drifting salinity — that no single test would expose, and it gives any professional a head start on understanding the system. The log is what turns a series of visits into a managed, stable reef.

Finally, recognize that reef tank maintenance rewards consistency above all. The reef that is maintained on a schedule outlasts the one that is maintained when life allows, and the narrow tolerances of stony corals make the cost of inconsistency far higher than in any other type of tank. The provider who arrives on schedule, tests every parameter, doses what is consumed, and documents the work is the one whose reef tank maintenance protects the investment in the coral, the equipment, and the years it took to build the display — and that consistency is the single most valuable thing the service provides.
